My Music
To me music is a friend and a way to express my emotions. Because my dad always has listened to music since I was born, music was always accessible to me. Therefore, I always sang along whenever I heard music in my dad's car. I believe that it was my dad who mostly influenced me in terms of music. My dad always has emphasized to me that music is a way to express one's emotion and soothe one's worries. Because of this, I always viewed music as a great factor in one's life.
However, there was a point in my life that really drew me to music. Rather than just liking music like before, after this turning point, music became a necessary factor in my life. This was when I moved to a different high school. During my freshman year I moved from Toronto, Canada to Seattle, Washington, and it was really difficult for me to adapt to a new environment. New people, a new school, and a new home were all difficult for me. In the beginning, I felt very gloomy and therefore, started to seek music to console my sadness. Since the freshman year of high school, I always have listened to music. Moving to a different high school, I started to use music as a way to adapt to my new home of Seattle. Music has become my friend since this time, because it was always there when I needed it the most.
Nevertheless my definition of music did not just stop as a friend. As I adapted myself to the new environment, I started to become interested in singing. Listening to music and videos of my favorite artists Tim Hwang, Buzz, and Younha made me realize how powerful singing can be. By listening to their emotional and enthusiastic music, I started to realize that singers express their emotions, thoughts, and messages through their music. After realizing this fact, I also wanted to express my feelings through music, especially during high school since I was timid and shy. Thus, I had many different emotions to express through music. This made me start learning guitar by myself and I started practicing singing. Seeing my passion towards music, my parents bought me a karaoke machine for me to practice singing and an electric and acoustic guitar for me to play. Everyday after school, I sang alone in my music room with the karaoke machine and my guitar. The stress that comes from school and social relationships were all soothed by singing. Through singing every day, music has become a way to express my emotions.
I still enjoy music and want to pursue my dream as a musician. One of my goals in college was to have my own band. I wanted to have a band that could express our emotions and feelings through music. I achieved this first goal by joining two different bands. One band is called Memento Mori in which I express my emotions through singing. Another band is called Absolute in which I can express my music through playing a guitar. I am so happy that I am in these bands, and I occasionally do performances to express my emotions. Music is currently a great freid of mine and will always be with me as a way to express my emotions!
